Promoting Physical Development

The Statewide Enrichment and Educational Development System (SEEDS) is happy to provide this professional development opportunity in Tucson at no cost to participants.

Participants will learn how important it is to provide many opportunities throughout the day for children to learn and practice basic physical skills. For most school-age children, acquiring physical skills is closely tied to feeling accepted by peers, having strong self concepts, and developing positive attitudes towards their own bodies.

Registration is required. Participants will receive a certificate of completion indicating hours of instruction.

Five Health & Fitness workshops, specifically designed for out-of-school time program staff will be showcased at the 2015 School’s Out, Make it Count Conference.

Out-of-school time programs play a critical role in keeping kids healthy and active. This year’s workshops are designed to help staff incorporate physical activity, good nutrition and health and wellness principles into your programs.

The Be Body Positive Model: An Introductory Workshop

A workshop for mental health professionals, physicians, nurses, dieticians, nutritionists, teachers, coaches, school counselors, school psychologists, health coordinators,and any other helping profession with an interest in learning more about the prevention,treatment and recovery from an eating disorder.

Elizabeth Scott, Co-Founder of The Body Positive will present a compelling, multi-media lecture and experiential workshop offering practical strategies to initiate positive body image campaigns at home, in schools in community-based organizations and in clinical work with clients with eating disorders. Elizabeth co-created the Be Body Positive Model to provide a sustainable framework for living in one’s body that is free from double binds, judgment, and blame. Each component of this model is supported by substantial research validating its use in reversing eating and body image problems. Using this model, professionals can help people reclaim their health, beauty, and intuition, and find joy in their unique bodies.

IAEDP Members register for $30.00 and non-members register for $35.00.

Webinar: 60 Minutes a Day! The Connection between Physical Activity and Academic Achievement

Active Kids Do Better. Research shows that 60 minutes of physical activity incorporated throughout the school day leads to higher academic achievement, Increased focus and attention, attendance, better health, and emotional fitness. Learn how Let’s Move! Active Schools is a solution in transforming the school community.

Participants will learn the research behind 60 minutes a day, the benefits, and examples of how this shift in the school environment is changing the academic achievement of students across the country. Key learning objectives are; how to lead their school into small changes within their classrooms, how to effectively use the School Health Index as an evaluation tool for their physical activity environment, and the benefits of working towards the national recognition award. Grants, resources, and professional development opportunities will be shared that help to support the teachers through the process. School leaders will learn about the partnerships that have aligned through the Let’s Move! Active Schools initiative to provide all support free of charge to school communities.

Participants will…
• Gain a better understanding of what Comprehensive Physical Activity Programs look like
• Learn how Comprehensive Physical Activity Programs incorporates the entire school community.
• Learn more about Let’s Move! Active Schools and how the school leader can use it as an evaluation tool.

Who: K-12 Physical Educators, Administrators, Before and After School Programs

Last year’s Lights On Afterschool celebration included 8,200 events held across the USA and the world, making it the brightest year ever. One million people joined together to shine a light on the amazing work that afterschool programs are doing to improve the lives of youth  and families in their communities—and it’s more important than ever to share those stories across the country!

This year, the Afterschool Alliance is connecting programs with elected officials to show community leaders how afterschool works; amplifying the important work that out-of-school time programs do for health and wellness; showcasing the amazing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning opportunities in afterschool; and celebrating the partnerships between OST programs and libraries across the country.

AHPE is a statewide organization whose mission is to provide leadership through continuing professional development and advocacy that ensures effective delivery of evidence-informed school physical education and community based physical activity programs that foster healthy, active and physically literate youth.

AHPE offers many excellent PD opportunities throughout the year. Some of their upcoming workshops include “Teaching Dance for Understanding,” “Disc Golf Workshop and Tournament,” “Learn to Curl” and their annual state convention!
